It is the blessed month of Rabiul Awwal, the month wherein our beloved Nabi Muhammad (Sallallhu Alayhi wa Sallam) was born and passed away. With this comes innovations (bid’ah) – actions not sanctioned by Muhammad
The exact date of birth of the Rasoolullah was born on Monday in the month of Rabi ul-Awwal. There is a difference of opinion whether this day was the 2nd, 8th, 10th or 12th day of the month – and these are the four most well-known opinions concerning this.”Tahdheeb Seeratun-Nabawiyyah (p.20) of Imaam an-Nawawee.
Rasoolullah passed away on Monday morning, the twelfth of Rabi ul-Awwal, in 11 AH at age of 63. (Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum/ Sealed Nectar)

I was speaking to my sister about this and that and as I was about to end my conversation when I mentioned that I was going to bake using my Snowflake easy mix whereupon she told me that it was haraam. I was shocked as the packaging suggested nothing haraam unless the colourant (which had E150 in brackets beside it) and raising agents were the haraam ingredients in the muffin mix.
E150 is responsible for the caramel colour that makes unhealthy goods look so appetizing. I didn’t think it was haraam because according to my knowledge caramel colouring is derived from products such as lactose (from milk), dextrose (usually derived from corn), starch hydrolysates (from corn or wheat), or malt syrup (in general derived from barley). So I didn’t find anything to make the muffin mix haraam, however Mu’allim Rashaad Sallie sent me the following information from the Jamiatal Ulama Gauteng…
SNOWFLAKE PRE-MIXES ARE HARAAM
In response to a query sent to the manufacturers of Snowflake pre-mixes the following reply was given:
“Dear XXXX
Herewith the information you require
We were advised that all the flavoured premixes are alcohol based and
they contain Whey….. Click here to Read More

What a hectic week it has been, and it’s only Wednesday! Ummul Hasanaat Newcastle closed today while the last day for Ummul Hasanaat Johannesburg is tomorrow. Congratulations to all the students who worked hard. Thank you to all the parents, for all the Aashura gifts, it is very much appreciated. Madrasah closed with the parents meeting and the handing out of reports, certificates and trophies today.
The heat was unbearable today. Those who fasted can tell you about it. Allah accept our efforts. Thank you parents for attending the meeting, I know it was a scorcher even with the fan on. This shows your caring and concern for your child’s deeni education.A big thank you to Mu’allim Rashaad for designing the certificates. We also honoured Mu’allimah Fahdia with a certificate of appreciation. Her efforts are valued.
Jazaakumullahu Ahsanal Jazaa to everyone who has been part of Ummul Hasanaat. Let’s continue to work in our triangle of teacher-parent-student. When there is harmony in that, great students emerge.
Please forgive us for our shortcomings and mistakes. May Allah keep us united as a loving family.
P.S May Allah grant Mu’allimah Kaashifa shifaa kaamil, she has not been well for a while, yet….. Click here to Read More

Oh how the year has passed yet again. The question to ask is “Have we improved spiritually in the past year?” Have we come closer to Allah? Have we become better to our fellow man or are we still chasing after the deceptive dunya with her poisonous alluring charms? It is the eve of Muharram here and I have made my resolution to be a Mu’minah, to reach greater communion with my Rabb, to touch more hearts and lives, to not ever miss tahajjud, to increase in Qur’aan… My list is loooong!
Let us start the new year with prayer and fasting and being good to each other.
We urge you to not make bid’ah (innovations) such as “Read this special salaah for the beginning of the month, like 2 Raka’ats salaah, recite Surah Fatihah & 30 times Sura Ikhlas…” PLEASE THIS IS NOT SANCTIONED BY THE AHLUS SUNNAH WAL JAMAA’AH.
Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam) said “The best fasting after Ramadhaan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.”
The phrase “Allah’s month”, connecting the name of the month to the name of Allah signifies the importance of the month.
It was proven that Rasoolullah (Sallallahu ‘Alayhi….. Click here to Read More

I have been a bit delayed with this post as it is exam time here. There’s barely time to do anything else but have exam fever. Without further adieu, Madrasah Ummul Hasanaat has been informed that 112 good quality Saudi printed Arabic Qur’aans (with Indo-Pak script) and 25 Hindi/Arabic/Urdu translations of the Noble Qur’aan (by Dr. Muhsin Khan and Dr. Taqi ud Din al Hilali) has reached Bihar, India much to the delight of our brother who called for help, Zia ul Haque. Alhamdulillah!

62 copies of Saudi printed Arabic Qur’aans (with Indo-Pak script) and 15 copies of the Hindi Noble Qur’aan translation were purchased from Islamic Bookstore Kolkata (www.islamicbookstore.co.in). 50 Saudi printed Arabic Qur’aans (with Indo-Pak script) and 10 Noble Qur’aans Arabic to English and Urdu translations were purchased from Darus Salam India (www.darussalam.in). Among the auspicious months of worship are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, which Allah has preferred over all the other days of the year. Ibn ‘Abbaas (radhiyallāhu anhumā) reported that Rasoolullah (Sallallhu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam) said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” The people asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by Bukhaari, 2/457).
Ibn ‘Abbaas (radhiyallāhu anhumā) also reported that the Rasoolullah (Sallallhu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam) said: “There is no deed more precious in the sight of Allah, nor greater in reward, than a good deed done during the ten days of Sacrifice.” He was asked, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even jihaad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by al-Daarimi, 1/357; its isnaad is….. Muallimah Kaashifa Asmal Jamal began teaching in 1998. In 2001 she agreed to privately tutor a boy diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and has grown day by day. Muallimah holds a special place in her heart for all her students. One would ask where does she draw her strength from other than turning to Allah?

I was having a discussion with my students about what they miss about Ramadhaan. Here’s what some of them had to say…
Shaazia Khan Surtee: “The reason why I love this month is because all the Muslims dress the way Muslims should. We also have many ‘big nights’ to make ibaadah and ask forgiveness. Allah has belessed us with this month, so we must take advantage of it by doing lots of good.”
Zainab Seedat, Munawwarah Tayob, Aaliya Essop, Akeela Ebrahim all agree that: “After a tough day of school the only thing on our minds is to get to madrasah. It’s both fun and educational and we get to learn amazing things about our Great Prophet, how he suffered hardships to spread Islam. We also learn to respect people around us and appreciate our parents.
Ramadhaan is the month of fasting. Treats after after we fast. Mmmmm! We also like the extra 20 raka’ats we read at night, it’s a special time which we only get once a year. It is a beautiful month in which we learn alot about at our madrasah”.

I read that that Israeli Military forces closed the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron (Khaleel) in the West Bank on Tuesday, October 4th 2011, and only allowed Israeli settlers to enter it. The occupation intends to close all the corridors and courtyards of the Ibrahim Mosque, while preventing the call to prayer, on Saturday, 8 October, in connection with the Yom Kippur holiday. Other than the unfairness of the apartheid state of Israel, my mind went to why Yom Kippur is actually celebrated. According to the Yahoodiyy, the Jewish Day of atonement Yom Kippur, commemorates the day that God “forgave” the Jewish people for the sin of the Golden Calf. Which brings us to the true story…
Moses (Moosa ‘Alayhis Salaam) had been gone for thirty days for purification before he could meet His Lord. He fasted and after thirty days used a piece of branch (miswaak) to clean his teeth and mouth because of the odour of his breath due to fasting. Allah then increased his time for a further ten days, which made it forty days. In his absence he had left his brother Aaron (Haroon ‘Alayhis Salaam) to keep watch of the….. Click here to Read More

It’s that time of year again when millions will make their way to the haram of Makkah al Mukarramah to begin their journey of tazkiyah (purification). With just about a month to go, many have left for ziyaarah of Masjid an Nabawi and then Makkah. Spiritual preparation and good health is key.
This year only 3,000 South African have been accredited for haj making it the lowest turnout in decades. Before the implementation of the haj quota system an average of 7,000 to 10,000 South Africans performed haj annually. 78% of applicants will be performing Hajj for the first time. (SAHUC) Allahu Akbar!
On 18 September 2011 the South African Hajj and Umrah Council notified all prospective hujjaaj of 1432H (2011) that the 3000 quota which was received for Hajj 1432H (2011) had been filled.
There are many broken hearts, some with resentment for the quota system, some just sad that they would not be able to be present at the House of Allah, al Ka’bah Shareef. At the end of it all, it is has been written. Whoever reaches the Holy House has been chosen by Allah and non can dispute that. When….. Click here to Read More

Many people out there don’t believe in evil eye but many cultures believe in it and it is called by different names, such as al ‘ain by the arab speaking people, nazr or najr by the Turks, Indians and Pakistanis; mal occhio or mal de ojo in italian and spanish. Whatever you call it, we as Muslims have been informed about this through Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam). Our knowledge as humans is so limited as we can’t explain things like “the evil eye” or “telepathy” for that matter. It just somehow exists, but while they rest of the masses go wondering, WE know from hadeeth that it exists. Rasoolullah (SAW) has even given us ilaaj (treatment) for it and protection from it. So what is al’Ain?
Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reported Rasoolullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) said “Seek refuge with Allah from the evil eye for the evil eye is a reality”. (ibn Mājah 3508)
Ibn Hajr (rahimahullah) holds the view that the evil eye is a glance combined with jealousy that comes from a despicable person to affect another. (Fat-hul Bāri: 10/200)
Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullah) tells us that al ‘ain is something that comes through nafs which is in you….. Click here to Read More
